The album was begun almost three years ago, and it was intended that it should be complete more than two years ago – every artist will be able to feel some measure of sympathy here.
Part of what caused it to take so long was a navigation approach whereby the scenery determined the destination, in other words, wherever it went influenced where it was going.
This philosophy grew with the project and settled in an idea that can best be described as ‘letting the songs find their own way. ‘
If you can imagine a pet mouse detaching a loose panel in his cage, that would, in a sense, represent the creative process used here. There was a huge, unexplored world that beckoned; there was no track to a pre-determined destination.
Melody remained cheese to the creative nose: much of the exploration was in sitting back and sniffing the air for strains of note and line to represent a musical tale with colour; then the scent would be followed eagerly, and wherever it led the air would be sniffed again.
The initial song-writing style was probably a kind of folk. But its atmosphere seemed to be calling for a bigger canvas, so wilder tones of Celtic, world, and hints of rock and orchestral flavours found their way into the songs.
A descriptive type of lyric was chosen to fill out the musical scenes with characters and settings drawn from many sources, hence the title – glimpses (of life, of people, of perspective).
The result is an album we hope will take you on a thoughtful exploration through some less-traversed song-scapes.
